Integration of three-dimensional metrology to strengthen homologation and dimensional control at Plásticos Lezo
New capabilities in three-dimensional measurement for technical parts
In an increasingly demanding industrial environment, where tolerances are tighter and validation processes more rigorous, dimensional measurement capabilities are becoming a strategic factor. For this reason, Plásticos Lezo, through the Magnia Group, has integrated metrology and three-dimensional measurement services using Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), thus strengthening its technical capacity in parts certification processes.
This addition addresses a specific need identified in recent years: the growing demand from our clients for three-dimensional dimensional verification at key project stages, especially during the presentation of initial samples.
Why is three-dimensional metrology key in the plastics industry?
In the manufacture of technical plastic parts, dimensional control is a crucial element. Even minimal deviations can affect assembly, functional performance, or even the safety of the final product. In sectors such as automotive, rail, electrical, and industrial, tolerances allow for no margin of error.
Three-dimensional metrology allows us to:
- Precisely measure complex spatial coordinates.
- Verify geometric and dimensional tolerances.
- Analyze deviations from CAD models.
- Detect deformations or shrinkage inherent in the injection molding process.
- Validate molds and initial samples before mass production.
Until now, Plásticos Lezo did not have its own three-dimensional measuring machines, which posed a limitation in certain homologation phases. With this integration, we address this technical need and strengthen our position as a comprehensive industrial supplier.
Equipment included: Mitutoyo CMM technology
The service relies on two Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), internationally recognized for their precision and reliability. Both operate using contact measurement, guaranteeing high accuracy in dimensional verification.
Mitutoyo CRYSTA APEX C574
• Measuring range: 505 x 705 x 405 mm
Mitutoyo CRYSTA APEX V 7106
• Measuring range: 700 x 1000 x 600 mm
The addition of the CRYSTA APEX V 7106, with its expanded measuring range, allows us to analyze larger parts and more complex geometries, enabling us to adapt to larger-scale technical projects.
These CMMs allow for precise three-dimensional measurements of surfaces, planes, cylinders, cavities, and complex geometries, which is especially relevant for injection-molded technical parts.
New investment in 2025: ZEISS Contura 7/10/6 RDS Compaq
As part of our continuous improvement and technological upgrade strategy, this year we invested in a third three-dimensional measuring machine (CMM): a ZEISS Contura 7/10/6 RDS Compaq.
The addition of this new CMM expands our measurement capabilities, providing:
- Greater versatility in measuring complex geometries.
- Increased operational capacity and reduced waiting times for validations.
- Improved accuracy and repeatability of dimensional controls.
With this third machine, we strengthen our technical structure and consolidate three-dimensional metrology as a stable pillar within our certification processes.
Direct application in homologation processes
The primary application of this service will be the parts homologation process and the presentation of first impression samples (FOT).
In practice, this involves:
- Dimensional verification of first injections.
- Control of critical dimensions defined by the client.
- Validation of dimensional behavior after cooling.
- Analysis of deviations before final approval.
In-house three-dimensional measurement capabilities allow for anticipating deviations and reducing risks before final client validation.
This translates into greater agility, fewer iterations, and less adjustment time in the initial phases.
Strategic impact for Plásticos Lezo customers
Integrating three-dimensional metrology is not just an internal technical improvement; it has a direct impact on our relationships with our clients.
1. Ability to work with tighter tolerances
More and more projects require tight tolerances and complex geometries. CMMs allow us to accurately measure dimensions that were previously unattainable with the available equipment.
This expands our technical capabilities and enables us to take on more complex projects.
2. Measurement of complex and critical dimensions
Certain internal surfaces, deep cavities, or hard-to-reach points can be precisely analyzed using contact measurement, ensuring compliance with technical specifications.
3. Enhanced confidence and technical perception
Having three-dimensional metrology capabilities conveys a greater degree of technical expertise. For our clients, it provides additional assurance that the certification process is supported by advanced technology.
4. Access to new sectors
In certain industrial sectors, three-dimensional measurement is an essential requirement for working as an approved supplier. This addition allows us to pursue projects in more demanding markets, where dimensional accuracy is a basic standard.
Metrology and continuous improvement
The integration of three-dimensional metrology is part of our continuous improvement strategy. At Plásticos Lezo, we understand that competitiveness depends not only on production capacity but also on rigorous technical control at every stage of the process.
This technical investment:
- Reduces dependence on third parties for internal validations.
- Improves efficiency during project start-up phases.
- Allows for the detection of deviations before they lead to rework.
- Increases the overall quality of the manufacturing process.
- Strengthening precision and control is a clear way to differentiate ourselves.
Another step in the technical evolution of Plásticos Lezo
The plastics industry is moving towards higher levels of technical requirements, traceability, and dimensional control. Three-dimensional metrology is now a key element for ensuring competitiveness in industrial markets.
With this addition, and the investment in a third ZEISS Contura 7/10/6 RDS Compaq machine, Plásticos Lezo reinforces its position as a technical partner capable of supporting clients from design to industrialization, integrating manufacturing and dimensional control into a more comprehensive value proposition.
We continue to advance in technology, processes, and capabilities to offer high-performance technical solutions aligned with the real needs of the market.
