What is Hot air dryer?

Inicio » Dictionary » Technology » Hot air dryer

A hot air dryer for plastic is equipment used in the polymer processing industry to remove surface moisture from materials before they are processed by injection molding, extrusion, or blow molding. This type of dryer is one of the simplest and most cost-effective systems for thermal pre-processing before molding, and it is especially suitable for non-hygroscopic materials such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or rigid PVC.

The working principle of a hot air dryer for plastic involves heating ambient air with an electric heater and directing it through a hopper filled with plastic pellets. The hot air circulates around the granules, evaporating the surface moisture and venting it from the system. This step improves processing quality by preventing moisture-related defects such as bubbles, surface blemishes, or dimensional instability.

Although this system is not suitable for hygroscopic materials—like PET, PA, or PC—which absorb moisture into their molecular structure, it remains highly effective for many common resins that require only surface plastic material dehumidification. For this reason, it is still widely used when a low-cost, easy-to-maintain solution is needed.

A major advantage of the hot air dryer for plastic is its operational simplicity. It requires no complex equipment, needs minimal maintenance, and can be easily integrated into automated production lines. Basic temperature control is usually sufficient for most moisture-insensitive polymers.

Proper adjustment of drying temperature and time is essential. Excessive heat can deform or pre-melt the material, while insufficient drying may leave residual moisture, compromising product quality. Therefore, despite its simplicity, this system should be operated with well-defined parameters tailored to each material type.

In comparison to desiccant dryers (rotor or desiccant bed types), which use dry air with controlled dew point, the hot air dryer for plastic cannot achieve deep-drying levels. However, its lower energy consumption and fast startup make it ideal for continuous operations with materials that are not sensitive to moisture absorption.

At companies like Plásticos Lezo, where various materials are processed depending on client needs, the use of dryers is matched to the polymer characteristics and the application’s demands. The hot air dryer for plastic is typically used in standard processes involving resins that do not require deep drying, ensuring efficient and consistent production.

Moreover, proper thermal pre-processing before molding not only improves molded part quality but also helps stabilize the injection process by avoiding viscosity fluctuations, facilitating mold filling, and reducing defect rates.

In summary, the hot air dryer for plastic is a practical and cost-effective tool for plastic material dehumidification, particularly for non-hygroscopic resins, and it serves as a reliable solution for thermal pre-processing before molding in production environments where simplicity, efficiency, and reliability are key.
