High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a widely used thermoplastic in the plastics industry due to its excellent balance of mechanical strength, flexibility, low weight, and chemical resistance. Thanks to its high density and low branching, HDPE offers greater rigidity and tensile strength compared to other polyethylene variants, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE). High-density polyethylene is easily processed through methods like injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and rotational molding, making it a highly versatile material. It is commonly used to manufacture rigid packaging, bottles, containers, drums, water and gas pipes, geomembranes, industrial boxes, toys, technical components, and molded parts.
One of the main advantages of HDPE is its high chemical resistance to acids, alkalis, alcohols, and saline solutions, making it ideal for applications requiring inert behavior. Additionally, it resists environmental stress cracking and is safe for food contact, which explains its widespread use in consumer product packaging.
From a thermal perspective, HDPE has a melting point of around 130 °C and can operate continuously in applications up to 80–90 °C. However, it is not suitable for high-temperature environments or prolonged UV exposure unless stabilized with specific additives, as it can degrade without proper treatment.
In injection molding, high-density polyethylene is known for its ease of processing, good flowability, and ability to reproduce fine details. However, it may require wider gating systems due to its relatively low density. Post-molding shrinkage is also a factor to consider when designing molds and parts.
