What is Desiccant dryer for plastics?

Inicio » Dictionary » Technology » Desiccant dryer for plastics

A desiccant dryer for plastic is a critical piece of equipment in the plastic processing industry, designed to remove internal moisture from hygroscopic materials—that is, polymers that absorb water molecules from the surrounding air. This type of dryer is essential to ensure both process reliability and product quality, particularly with engineering plastics such as PET, PA (polyamide), PC (polycarbonate), and ABS.

Unlike hot air dryers that only remove surface moisture, the desiccant dryer for plastic uses dry air with a controlled dew point, typically below -40 °C. This dry air passes through the resin in the hopper, progressively drawing out the moisture from within the plastic pellets. The moist air is then regenerated in a closed-loop system, maintaining energy efficiency and drying consistency.

The system works by passing the air through a desiccant bed—usually made of silica gel, molecular sieve, or a combination of both—which absorbs the moisture from the process air. These controlled dew point drying systems are capable of achieving extremely low residual moisture levels, which is essential for high-performance applications like optical parts, medical components, electronics, or food-contact products.

Proper setup of key drying parameters—such as drying temperature, residence time, air flow, and dew point—is critical for optimal performance. Inadequate drying can lead to defects like internal bubbles, brittleness, thermal degradation, poor surface finish, or dimensional instability. Conversely, over-drying or incorrect settings may damage the polymer, reduce its thermal stability, or cause yellowing.

Modern desiccant dryer for plastic systems are typically automated and equipped with electronic controls that adapt parameters based on the material type and ambient conditions. Many feature twin-tower desiccant designs, ensuring a continuous supply of dry air—even during desiccant regeneration. This setup enhances system efficiency and ensures stable, uninterrupted operation.

In an industrial setting, using a desiccant dryer for plastic is especially important in high-precision production lines, where even slight variations in moisture content can directly impact product quality and process repeatability. This is particularly true in injection molding of complex parts or in extrusion of sheets, fibers, or tubes where moisture presence can affect dimensional accuracy and mechanical strength.

At companies like Plásticos Lezo, which process technical polymers for demanding applications, moisture removal in hygroscopic polymers using desiccant systems is considered best practice. Proper material preparation prior to molding not only ensures structural and aesthetic quality, but also supports energy efficiency and reduced rejection rates.

In summary, the desiccant dryer for plastic is a key solution for moisture removal in hygroscopic polymers, indispensable in the processing of technical materials. Thanks to controlled dew point drying systems, stable processes, high-quality parts, and improved production efficiency can be achieved in modern plastics manufacturing.
